There’s a great point in the movie Jerry Maguire when Marcy confronts Jerry about her husband’s contract negotiations. She berates him and finally yells, “What do you stand for!?”
In music I believe the best people to work with are those who stand for something. Whether that thing is social reform, education on the truth about drugs, human rights awareness or simply those who play music to show the joy in creating.
Artists who have as their goal to get big “just to get big” are ultimately going to lose the game. What are you going to DO with yourself once you are “big”? You will have this huge audience of people that are all looking up to you. Don’t you want to say you stand for something bigger than yourself?
True, it can be a hard road. There are people who will try and stop you. There are people who will tell you to just play music and shut up. But there will be a lot more people who will listen. There will me more people who respect you. And ultimately you will feel better about yourself as a person.
I am not the only one who thinks so! Musicians as role models:
Bono – One Foundation
Eric Clapton – Crossroads Music Festival
John Mayer – Another Kind of Green
